Traveling Tanzania with Gilbert Minja
From De Anna, Placerville, CA

Taking a month out of my life's schedule to travel around Tanzania with Gilbert Minja was one of my “dreams come true”. I met him one year previous, while on Safari. We became friends and stayed in touch until I was able to return to Arusha the following year.

Since I was a small child, I always wanted to see Chimpanzees in the wild. He (Gilbert) was my chance. I thought about the jungle climb at my age (63) and knew it would be tough, but when I asked Gilbert if he could travel with me and he said yes, I knew I would be safe.

Traveling by bus, very small airplanes, (landing on dirt not paved runways) taxi and foot we started our journey. We even borrowed a Jeep from friends one day to go on a Safari.

Not only did we go to Gombe for my Chimpanzee “dream come true”, we visited friends in Arusha, Kilimanjaro, (Gilbert does most of his work there) Moshi(where I met some of his family), Dar-es-Salaam, (friends from his school days took us around and to their home for dinner) Zanzibar,(spice shopping) Shinyanga, Kigoma, Ujiiji (Dr. Livingston,) Mwanza, Lake Victoria and visiting my friend from a Massai village.

Leaving Africa, this time, was very hard for me. There were many tears at the Air Port.

Make your dreams come true and travel Tanzania or climb Kilimanjaro with Africa Travel Adventure (Gilbert Minja).

To be shown the way up Kilimanjaro is one thing but one of the most evocative mountains in the world deserves so much more. Gilbert's enthusiasm for Kilimanjaro is contagious and his genuine concern for our wellbeing encouraged us to relax and savour every moment of our honeymoon trek. His advice and encouragement ensured all members of our group not only made it to the top successfully, but also enjoyed each day of the trek immensely.

I highly recommend that you choose Gilbert and his team for your trip up Kilimanjaro as you can be guaranteed a highly enjoyable and successful trip.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is my greatest achievement and it would not have been possible without Gilbert and his team.

I walked the Rongai Route, and from day one our small group was well looked after. Our camp was always set up, ready and waiting for us when we had completed our day’s climb. The food was excellent and gave us the much needed energy to carry on climbing.

We learned alot about the plants and animals, which all added to the experience.

Gilbert kept the pace steady, reciting the Kilimanjaro mantra "Pole Pole" - slowly slowly. This ensured we were all acclimatised and ready for summit night.

Summit night lived up to expectations as one of the hardest but most memorable and rewarding experiences of my life. Gilbert kept me going when I was running low on energy (even carrying my bag)! Sunrise atop this magical mountain in this amazing country was fantastic. Its with thanks to Gilbert and his team that I can say "I stood on the roof of Africa"

I highly recommend you to do the same and climb Kilimanjaro with someone who knows the mountain so well. With Gilbert, you will have the best chance of making it to the top and, more importantly, back down again!

The most memorable time of the journey was the summit night. Gilbert quietly hummed the Kilimanjaro song as our steps fell in to a hypnotic rhythm. If you decide to ask Gilbert, leader of the Africa Travel Adventure team, to lead you up up that most magical of mountains, we have nodoubt you will not only make it to the top, but will also have the most amazing journey of your life. A million thanks to Gilbert and his team!”

Gilbert guided us on a fantastic trip up Kilimanjaro via the Shira plateau in 2005. I cannot say enough good things about him. He was a knowledgeable and patient guide, and always seemed to have a smile on his face. He was absolutely dedicated to our wellbeing, as well as that of our support team. I've climbed many mountains with many climbing partners, and I'd go anywhere with Gilbert.
